CTDOT Strain Gauge Installation & Monitoring at the Moses Wheeler Bridge

Stratford, CT

AI Engineers Inc. (AIE) was tasked to furnish and install monitoring system and conduct monitoring of bridge piers with all necessary equipment, services, and related items in strict accordance with all plans and specifications for the Reconstruction of the Moses Wheeler Bridge for CTDOT by the Walsh Contraction Company. The Moses Wheeler Bridge carries Interstate-95 over the Housatonic River between the Town of Stratford and the City of Milford in Connecticut.

The bridge is one of the longest bridge in Connecticut and carries the traffic of 135,000 cars and trucks on a daily basis. In order to accommodate the traffic demand, the bridge was expanded by adding four full-width shoulders while retaining the current six-lane highway. During construction, when the new piers were placed, it was discovered that the north and south piers were leaning.

In order to monitor the stability/leaning of the new bridge piers during and after construction, sensors were specified for piers 4 through 9.

AIE recommended AcTiMon sensors for this project because of their ability to monitor tilt, acceleration (vibrations), and temperature with a high degree of accuracy. These sensors were active during and after construction.
