Town of Ossining McCarthy Drive Roadway Rehabilitation & Water Main Replacement

Town of Ossining, NY

AIE provided design services to the Town of Ossining and the Village of Ossining Water Department for the replacement of an existing water main, the implementation of drainage improvements, and the complete reconstruction of an existing roadway in a residential area of the Town of Ossining. As part of this project, AIE procured approvals from the Westchester County Department of Health, prepared a stormwater pollution prevention plan, and filed a Notice of Intent with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

AIE designed a temporary water main system that was used to provide continuous water supply to all 30 residents/water customers for the duration of the water main replacement phase of construction. The existing water main was replaced with 2,000+ linear feet of eight (8) inch Class 52 cement-lined ductile iron water main and also included the replacement of gate valves, hydrants, curb valves, and copper type ‘k’ water services. In order to minimize disturbance, maintain required horizontal separations from existing sanitary sewers and new drain lines, AIE designed the replacement of the water main to occur in the location of the existing water main. AIE oversaw the installation of the new water main and the removal of the existing water main as well as the pressure and bacteriological testing and activation of the new water main. Through all facets of water main work, AIE worked closely with the Water Department for a seamless transition from old water main to new.

As part of this project AIE also designed a comprehensive drainage system where none had existed. This included the implementation of catch basins, drain manholes, high density polyethylene piping, and a corrugated metal pipe gallery (and control structure) for stormwater detention. For stormwater quality AIE designed an in-line hydrodynamic separator as well as a full-section of porous pavement.

To complete the roadway reconstruction portion of the project, AIE designed the widening of McCarthy Drive within the existing right-of-way, full reveal concrete curbs, and a robust roadway section. AIE worked closely with the Town to minimize the impact on private properties and the restoration of site features where applicable.

In addition to the anticipated design portions of this project, AIE also orchestrated extensive coordination with Consolidated Edison, Verizon, and Altice (Cablevision) as all utilities were located underground. AIE field representatives provided an open line of communication with all residents throughout the project to ensure minimal disruption to services and the everyday activities of the neighborhood.
