AIE is providing Resident Engineering as the owner’s representative for Long Island Railroad during the reconstruction of I-287 (Van Wyck Expressway).  The first phase of this massive highway expansion project  is the widening of the LIRR Atlantic 6 Line bridge.  Work included relocation of train traffic to adjacent tracks and stage construction including demolition of the existing bridge, relocation of utilities, new 16 in. caissons driven 50 ft. deep, new abutment and pier stems, new structural steel girders, installation of concrete ties, and new track.

The work is being performed during days, nights and weekends to accommodate adjacent track outages and minimize impact to vehicular traffic.  It required extensive coordination with NYSDOT, NYCDOT as well as LIRR ( Signal, Power, Communications and Track Departments). The existing bridge was a 5 span bridge which is being reconstructed as a two span multi girder bridge. The Resident Engineer is coordinating track fouls and outages, lane closures, force account work as well as providing daily work reports, progress photos, attending project related meetings.
