vdot prescoping study for the rehabilitation of two culverts

prince william county, va

AIE provided prescoping study for the repair and rehabilitation of two culverts in Prince William County in Virginia.

The two culverts consisted of one double corrugated metal pipe (CMP) culvert and one combination of concrete and CMP culvert in fair and poor condition, respectively. Severe section loss in CMP, deflection of pipe near outlet, spalling with exposed rebar and heavy leakage at joints were some of the critical observations. Notable common distresses also included spalls, cracks, delamination, channel scour at outlet, undermining, debris inside the pipe culvert, impact damage on guardrail and missing asphalt coating inside the CMP.

AIE prepared the prescoping report for each of the culvert outlining five alternatives for the study such as concrete invert repair, smooth wall steel pipe liner, full replacement etc. Out of the 5, 3 most feasible alternatives were described in detail with the estimated cost implications for each of the solutions.

Considering minimum impact to traffic and the community, and to improve the structure condition rating, AIE’s final recommendations estimated a combined cost of approximately $3.6 million for both the culverts. The recommendations included a smooth wall steel pipe liner to the double CMP culvert prioritizing the improvement of structure rating. For the other culvert, a concrete invert repair was suggested acknowledging an economical construction with least impact to environment, ROW, MOT, and land disturbance.

AIE provided narratives on the hydrologic evaluation of all alternatives, Roadway, MOT, and Environmental review of the culvert locations. The general plans and sketches accompanying the concise prescoping report were also prepared. AIE’s study and recommendations were based on the client’s requirements, economic considerations, and ease of construction.
