Town of North Canaan Restoration of Union Station
North Canaan, CT
AI provided design services for this historic railroad station restoration project. The scope involved code review, contract plans, and specifications to meet ConnDOT and FHWA submission standards. AI also provided construction inspection services during the construction phase. In addition, all work was in compliance with the Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Structures as well as review by the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Originally one of the oldest rail stations in continuous operation, this station was 60% destroyed by fire in 2001. A prior phase of renovation in 2005 reconstructed the destroyed east-west wood structure in preparation for this full renovation project. The objective was to return the function of the station to its most recent past commercial uses prior to the fire, including potential retail, restaurant, business offices, bank, and/or museum tenants. The building design completed the earlier partial exterior restoration work and provided a complete interior design for the planned new spaces for use by future tenants and its owner, the Connecticut Historical Railroad Association. In order to achieve this, the building design brings the facility up to current Connecticut Building and Fire Safety Codes including compliance with ADA requirements. Due to the fire and earlier modifications to the building’s wood structure, significant repairs and strengthening of the internal frame and floors were required.
The facility design included a new automatic fire sprinkler system, a fire/security alarm system, and a handicapped accessible elevator. New electrical systems, including lighting, telephone, data, and tenant power, were part of the design. The facility will have new heating and air conditioning systems as well as a complete new plumbing system.
In addition, the surrounding site is being developed with parking, lighting, and sidewalks to coordinate and blend in with the town’s recent streetscape initiative.
