NYSDOT Design of Park Avenue Viaduct

AI provided Final Design Plans for an on-ramp to the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE/I-278) viaduct over the very busy Park Avenue for NYSDOT. This work was a portion of a larger project involving the entire Park Avenue viaduct. AI was involved in preparing plans, design, cost estimates, specification and constructability reviews, and construction support services for Tillary Street Bridge and temporary ramps. Rehabilitation of the ramp bridge included final design plans, structural and civil design, specification and estimates.
The highway bridge replacement included four spans on a three girder rolled steel system. AI designed each 64-foot span with LRFD using a composite concrete cantilevered deck and framing over the gore area. The bridge girders required new stiffened steel bearing seats widened for seismic loading and new bearing pads. AI designed a multi-stringer framed area that was supported by the main girders where the on-ramp meets the main line and the gore area; the columns required seismic strengthening.
Other components of structural design included mainline approach slabs, wing walls and repair of retaining walls. AI provided an in-depth inspection of the abutment and strengthened the pier footings to accommodate seismic loads
