NYSDOT Region 8 Sign Inspections
performed inspections of overhead sign support structures as a prime consultant in NYSDOT Region 8, which includes Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster, and Westchester Counties. The contract included approximately 216 signs to be inspected, inventoried, and analyzed over a 29-month period.
AI coordinated two teams throughout the counties to provide hands-on inspection (within .5m of component). Special attention was given to fatigue-type non-redundant members including areas prone to cracks, welds at tubular connections, welds, and deformation areas. Flags were issued for conditions that could have potentially caused imminent failure of a critical or non-critical primary structural component.
Inspection of the overhead sign structures was performed in accordance with the requirements of the NYSDOT Sign Structure Inspection Manual and Federal NBIS, 23CFR Part 650. The tools and equipment used for these projects included bucket trucks, torque wrenches, D-meters, dye penetrate test kit, magnetic particle, etc.
AI managed and coordinated all activities associated with inventory and QA/QC. The project team consisted of experienced bridge/structural engineers who also performed maintenance and protection of traffic. This project was successfully completed on time and within budget.
