VDOT Load Rating

Statewide, VA

AI has been performing load ratings of highway bridges for VDOT since 2008 and to date this project has included approximately 3,500 bridges ranging from simple to complex major river and highway crossing structures. These bridges are required to be rated using BrR software in LRFR method. Where BrR cannot accommodate the bridge-type, we’ve performed special modeling and analysis using specialized software such as STAAD.Pro, MDX, DESCUS and BRASS culvert. This project also requires field inspection of the structures which have not been inspected and those whose inspection reports and plans do not have enough information to perform a load rating. The final reports are formatted such that the electronic files can be linked to the Commonwealth’s Super Load Program which is used to select routes for oversize trucks. Structure types have included continuous steel multi-girder structures up to 29 spans and some steel curved girder bridges. Some of the complex bridges rated, using BrR, under this contract include:
