MTA LIRR Hudson Yards Western Rail Yard

Manhattan, NY

AI is providing resident engineering and inspection services on the Long Island City Yard project. This restoration/resiliency project will remove petroleum-impacted soil as required by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to implement restorative and resiliency/mitigation measures mandated by the occurrence of Superstorm Sandy, for future protective purposes, and to bring the yard to a state of good repair.

The LIRR LIC storage yard is located in western Queens, east of Second Street, west of Vernon Boulevard and South of Borden Avenue and serves a critical role by providing a location to store LIRR train equipment mid-day as well as undertake inspections, repairs, maintenance, and cleaning for the LIRR fleet. This yard serves the operational needs of Long Island City and Hunterspoint Avenue LIRR stations by providing a location to store/position train equipment in the vicinity of these stations.

The total scope of work for the project includes reconstruction of Tracks 9 - 12 including restoration of 3rd rail systems; switch replacements; remediation; perimeter flood protection walls and gates; construction car cleaning platforms; and underground utilities including storm drainage, sewer, water, and 3rd rail conduits; sump chambers and flap valves; storm water detention and management system including flap valves, sumps, pumps and chambers; raised track profiles (to raise elevation); traction and wayside power systems; noise mitigation strategies; and removal of petroleum contaminated soil.

The scope of work also includes the installation of new asphalt paving walkways and roadways as well as the installation of new site lighting, fencing, railing, and signage. In addition, to properly stage work and minimize impacts to the operation, early construction to support restoration and mitigation will include installation of 3rd rail systems on Tracks 7 and 8 (also enhances system resiliency) including a fueling safety interlock.
