ConnDOT Waterbury Bus Storage & Maintenance Facility

AI provided construction management, construction inspection, and building systems design services for the construction of the new 376,000-sf Waterbury Bus Storage and Maintenance Facility. The new facility, currently in use by ConnDOT was constructed to increase public transportation resources in Northwestern, CT and meets CT High Performance Building regulations.

Features of the building include a covered employee parking area, a main level that provides inside storage and maintenance for approximately 100 to 150 buses and transit vehicles of various types, and a second level that provides offices and work areas for the administrative staff. The interior of the building also includes high- efficiency LED lighting, custom HVAC systems, fire suppression systems, a two-lane bus wash, a chassis wash, vehicle service bays, five rotary bus lifts, a paint booth and tire shop, terrazzo flooring, storefront and aluminum curtain wall windows, and horizontal and vertical metal wall panels. The project consisted of many different construction elements including:

  • Concrete footings, columns foundation walls, and retaining walls
  • Slab on grade/slab on deck construction
  • Two-way post-tensioned slab with trench drains and topping slab
  • Low density foam concrete
  • High bay steel truss construction; concrete sidewalks and curb
  • New HMA pavement
  • Infiltration basins
  • Native site plantings. 

The design for the building fire protection systems required determining appropriate protection of the multiple occupancies of the facility as well as addressing the environmental conditions and facility size, including:

  • Six separate fire protection water services all connected to the looped 12” water main that provides fire protection and potable water to the facility
  • Sprinkler system ranging from light hazard for spaces such as the administration spaces and locker rooms to ordinary hazard group 1 for the bus storage/maintenance/repair spaces to ordinary hazard group 2 for localized storage areas involving combustibles such as tire storage and lubrication.
  • Wet pipe sprinkler design as well as a dry pipe design in areas exposed to freezing temperatures such as the parking underneath the facility and the various vehicle entrances. Multiple wet and dry standpipes were required throughout the new facility to meet the fire hose stream distance and water delivery requirements.

The design of the building plumbing systems included:

  • Natural gas piping system for facility heating
  • Domestic hot, tempered and cold water piping systems
  • Sanitary drainage and vent systems and a storm drainage system including holding tanks and oil/particle separators.
  • High efficiency/low water use plumbing fixtures were provided.
  • Electric point of use water heaters at the sink and shower locations provide hot water.
  • All sanitary wastes are gravity collected to a single sewage ejector on-site station, which connects to a 6 inch force main that extends offsite to the utility connection.
